School Board
95% of school boards across the nation are
elected. Maryland now has 16 counties operating under an elected board, and Prince
George's is making efforts to revert to an elected school board-- this is over 2/3 of our
sister counties.
By allowing the citizens to determine who runs our schools, the
community as a whole is given a greater stake in the educative process. The school
board members themselves are given a greater appreciation for the community, and can feel
how vital their position truly is. The students and teachers are given a system that
can better listen to their needs, and the system as a whole will excel as a result.
Above
you will find a proposed law for a "blended school board." This board
would have 6 elected members, 4 appointed members, and 1 student member. This
balance creates a system that gives the citizens the majority voice, but maintains an
expert board that is removed from the partisan political questions that have bogged down
school boards in other jurisdictions in recent years.
You
will also find a table of research Brian compiled, detailing the codified systems of all
of Maryland's counties. There is also a petition calling for an elected school
board, so that you can help gather signatures of support. Completed petitions can be
mailed to our office at 15 N. Main Street in Bel Air.
